Hidden Valley, CA
Hidden Valley Lake was pure, enchanting beauty. This mountain lake’s shimmering 101 acres were a centerpiece of swimming, boating and trout fishing for the entire community. Then blue-green algae blooms set in, and milfoil erupted with a vengeance.
Union Point, GA
Sherrills Creek Reservoir in Union Point, GA had a triple dose of problems. This 48-acre lake was laden with high levels of manganese and iron, giving the water an unnatural dark color and causing it to stain their customers’ clothes and plumbing fixtures. Also, a proliferation of blue-green algae blooms resulted in finished water with an unpleasant taste and odor.
Palmdale, CA
The treatment plant and reservoir at Palmdale, California always strives to maximize water quality. Part of the challenge was blue-green algae that choked the reservoir all summer, giving the water bad taste and odor.
At first, Greg Dluzak coped by dumping up to 2000 pounds of copper sulfate into the lake each week. But chemicals are costly, and they’ll cause environmental problems down the road. Always open to innovative solutions, Palmdale installed seven SolarBee® water circulators on the reservoir, and three more in the storage tanks. SolarBee’s near-laminar flow worked wonders.
Pagosa Springs, CO
The clear blue waters of Hatcher Reservoir are striking against the distant snow capped mountains. But it wasn’t always that way. “We had a big problem with blue-green algae blooms,” said Art Holloman. So the district installed two SolarBee® 10000 v12 water circulators in 2005. Those units did such a great job they placed three more in the reservoir in 2008. The SolarBees cleaned up all those nasty blooms and really helped to lower the source water Total Organic Compounds (TOC). And now, Pagosa Springs saves a fortune on copper sulfate and activated carbon filters.
